Champagne Gatinois, Aÿ Grand Cru, Brut Tradition, Champagne, France, NV, 12% abv. C$60

Here is a champagne from deep in the Marne in tiny Aÿ, located to the east of Épernay.  This is a 90% Pinot Noir based champagne with 10% Chardonnay, but it’s 100% Grand Cru and grown on the 7.3 ha of land owned by the house.Gatinois

Gatinois is a very small producer that has been in business since 1696 and spanned the lifetimes of 12 generations of descendants.  Much of the wine they produce is sold to larger houses, but since the 1990s, the current owner, Pierre Cheval has been producing more of his own champagnes.

This Brut Tradition NV version has a gorgeous pale gold hue with a deep onion skin overlay allowing it to have tinge of pink in some lights.  The persistent mousse and beading is impressive.

The nose shows aromas of softly sweet, sugary Danish with crushed rocks and Meyer lemon juice while the palate is dry with medium plus acidity and elegant alcohol.  The flavours offer Macintosh apple, soft lemon, more Danish and pebbles.

A delicious, delicate, well constructed and balanced champagne.  With its creamy mouth feel and good finish, this is WSET Very Good.  Drink as often as possible.

Blackwood Lane, Meritage, The Reference, Okanagan Valley, BC, 2006, 14.2% abv, C$90

Blackwood Lane 1When I purchased this bottle back at the beginning of my journey into serious wine interests, I definitely expected more.

Looking back, I think I was rather naive and most certainly I spent too much money.  Ah well, live a little and learn a lot.

A blend of grapes sourced from around the Okanagan (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet France, Malbec and Petit Verdot), this Meritage blend was opened in July 2015 making it just short of 9 years old.

A bonafide Meritage with deep garnet and no rim with an intense nose of cherry and blueberry with sweet vanilla pod and pie.

The palate is dry with average acidity, ripe tannins and high alcohol.  The flavours show boysenberry, blueberry, black cherry and purple plum with heavy vanilla, tobacco leaf and sweet cooking spice.

This wine is, to be honest, disappointing.  It has turned out to be nothing more than an unbalanced, sweet fruit bomb with high alcohol.

Simple and sweet with no complexity – WSET Acceptable.

Pluma, Casa de Vila Verde, Vinho Verde DOC, Portugal, 10.5% abv.

pluma 4There at the Wines of Portugal – Vancouver tasting table #40 was Ricardo Jorge Pinto Correia, the Director of Casa Santos Lima with a line up of wines to show Vancouver.

Friendly, unflappable and enthusiastic about his wares, Ricardo happily explained in great detail about the lines he was showing from numerous producers, including heavier weights such as Quinta de Porrais pluma 1(formerly owned by the legendary, first woman of Portuguese wine, Doña Antonia Ferreira), and a strawberries and creamy rosé called Portuga made of Castelão and (closely related) Camarate pluma 2grapes from Lisbon.

This light pleaser, the Pluma from Vinho Verde, however was the one I started with.  Effervescent and refreshing, it’s a very pale shade of straw and is made from a blend of Trajadura/Treixadura, Loureiro pluma 3(both commonly used in Vinho Verde), Avesso (for scent) and Arinto (lemon and citrus) grapes.

It’s intensely aromatic – much moreso than the average Vinho Verde – and shows a massive bouquet of green flowers.  The lightly sparkling palate has high acidity and expresses flavours of fresh lemon, lime blossom and green tomato with a good finish.

WSET Good, this is a simple but delicious wine with light alcohol.  Great for those quintessential hot summer days – or equally well matched with fresh seafood.

Le Clos des Grillons, Les Terres Blanches, Côtes du Rhône AC, France, 2012, 14.5% abv.

Le Clos de GrillonsThis wine is produced by vigneron Nicholas Renaud who came to winemaking from teaching in 2008.  He works from 18 ha of 70-80 year old vines, 80% of which he rents.

The soil of the Les Terres Blanches vineyard is very sandy with a little clay and is subjected to the mistral winds.  He uses very little intervention – including no fining or filtering and no gum arabic in the cellar to hide tannins.  With that, we are getting a real deal wine that shows sincere terroir.

This wine is made from Carignan and Grenache and is deep purple with aromas of ripe plum, pine needle, rosemary, sage and thyme.  The palate is dry with lightly green tannins and medium plus body.  The alcohol is high but unobtrusive.  Flavours show more Italian plum with intense garrigue, leather saddle, bacon and pepperoni.

The finish shines on this elegantly complex WSET Very Good wine (purchased from Garagiste Wines, Seattle).

Pahlmeyer, Merlot, Napa Valley, California, 2011, 15.2% abv, US$85

pahlmeyer 2If violet coloured velvet were a wine, it would be this one.

Plush and sensuous, it’s made with 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and a smattering of Malbec.  The grapes came from three separate vineyards.

On the eyes it’s a deep ruby with tinges of purple and fat legs.  The nose is complex with blueberry, Damson plum, boysenberry, pastry and vanillin with baking spice.  The longer it sat in the glass, the more I reminisced about fresh boysenberry or blueberry pie.  Who needs dessert?

On the palate, it’s dry with ripe and silky tannins and although the alcohol is high, it’s balanced completely with the layered flavours and aromas.  It’s got a medium acidity and flavours show more blue and purple berries, black cherry, orange oil, a little herb, cinnamon and pie with a long and sumptuous finish.

WSET Very Good plus and absolutely delicious.

Miraval, Rosé, Jolie-Pitt & Perrin, Provence AC, France, 2014, 13% abv. 19.50 GBP / C$29 ++

There’s not much about this famous Brangelina – Perrin brothers product you can’t find on the internet.  A quick search brings up a mere 27,900 links on Google.  It was named on Wine Spectator’s 100 top wines of 2013 as the top rosé, and placed 84th on the overall list of world wines.Miraval

Admittedly Wine Spectator has better and more qualified writers than yours truly making the calls, but I still would not say this is the best rosé in the world.  However, it is a very pretty and tasty drink, nonetheless.  The packaging alone is beautiful – although it doesn’t fit easily into any wine fridge or typical cellar system because of its unusual size.

On the eyes, it’s a delicate deeper-than-onion-skin and lighter-than-pink blush.  And the nose is equally light with aromas of cherries, raspberries, strawberries, cotton candy and meadow flowers.  But, don’t be fooled by its appearance.  Underneath this delicate exterior lurks a bold, medium plus bodied wine with the flavours of the Southern Rhône Valley from the Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah and Rolle grapes it’s made with.

The palate is bone dry with a big medium plus body, no tannins and medium plus acidity.  The flavours show cherries, peaches, berries with high alcohol for a rosé .  As it warmed to room temperature, we tasted green strawberries – the kind you get at Costco in January. The garrigue element was enhanced by the lavender in the sausage we paired it with.  The finish is average.

The best pairings with its weightier than anticipated body were the saucisson sec with lavender, the duck and pork rillettes and the tapenade with feta.  It was middling with roasted chicken, ham and olives, and don’t even look at sweet cherries or tart, pickled cornichons if you’re considering this rosé with a spread of food.

A load of fun to drink because of the names and prestige associated with it – a  WSET Good plus bottle. Château Miraval also produces a red and a white.

Casal Garcia, Vinho Verde DOC, Portugal, 9.5% abv, C$12.75 ++

Young and refreshing – just as promised in Portuguese on the label!  This is cheap and cheerful at its best.casal garcia

Vinho Verde literally means ‘green wine’ but refers to the fact that it’s supposed to be enjoyed young.  Make sure the bottle you purchase is labeled with the year prior to the one you’re drinking it in.

White wine made from Treixadura, Loureiro, Azal and Arinto grapes, it is the lightest shade of straw with a light spritz.  The nose is delicate with lemon and almonds.

The palate is softly citrus with white peach and apricot and there’s a quick finish on this WSET Good wine – a classic for seafood and summer.

We drank it with mussels marinière and fresh spot prawns sautéd in garlic and shallots.  Somehow the bottle ended up being recycled prior to photographing, so this is courtesy of the Casal Garcia website.

Qupé, Syrah, Central Coast, California, 2012, 13.5% abv.

“Whose bottle is this!?”qupe 4

This bottle of Qupé flew to Saltspring Island, BC from Menlo Park, California and almost didn’t make it onto the plane due to someone forgetting it was actually in the hand luggage.  Oops.

In the post-911 flying era, one never likes to be the person who mistakenly leaves two bottles of gorgeous red wine in their carry-on, thus becoming the reluctant target of the indignant screening guard.

The good news is it got here and we enjoyed Bob Lindquist’s efforts immensely.

Medium ruby with remarkably even legs, it shows aromas of boysenberry, blueberry, rosemary and thyme with leather.

The palate is dry with more deep flavours of blue fruit, crunchy, dried herbs, kid glove and a cured salami.

Plush, complex and with a long finish, this is WSET Very Good.

Pinot Noir, Cumières Rouge, Champagne Geoffroy, Coteaux Champenois AC, Champagne, France, 12.5% abv.

This is actually THE bottle that is the cumieres rougepictured headliner on this very site.  I snapped that picture in June 2014 when visiting Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, his lovely wife and tribe of spirited daughters in Aÿ.

The cork used is a traditional one that is fastened down with a brass clip – and is a little challenging to remove, I might add.

c

This is Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy’s still red wine produced from premier cru rated vineyards of Pinot Noir grapes in Cumières. The vineyards are located to the south of Hautvilliers and on the right bank of the Marne River (facing southeast) .

bAn elegant, translucent garnet with aromas of cherry and oak, the wine shows a dry palate with medium plus acidity.

Flavours include ripe, red cherry, strawberry juice, light cedar strips and a dried tobacco .

Unfined and unfiltered with a lovely level of alcohol balanced delicately between tannin and fruit, this is WSET Very Good.

AcÚstic, Garnaxa Blanca, Montsant DO, Spain, 2012, 14% abv. C$27 @ Marquis Wine Cellars

Acustic 1Montsant DO lies literally in a ring around tiny Priorat DOQ just inland on the northeastern shores of Spain, southwest of Barcelona.  Oft ignored as ‘lesser than’ compared to the tinier but mightier DOQ it surrounds, this wine is proof the region may yet see an export market more than willing to invest in its wines.

Purchased in Vancouver, BC, Albert Jané’s white grenache wine is the real deal (for more information from Miquel Hudin’s Wine on VI, click here).  He also makes wine at Ritme Celler in Priorat (which I enjoyed at our hotel there in January 2015).

A deep lemon tone, this wine has aromas of brine, lime, pink grapefruit, white peach and pebbles.  The sherry-like palate is dry with a structured body, juicy acidity and flavours of more white peach and ripe apricot with lime rind, lemon curd and minerals.

A solid finish rounds out this well-balanced, WSET Good plus wine.  Available at Marquis Wine Cellars.
