Montsant DO lies literally in a ring around tiny Priorat DOQ just inland on the northeastern shores of Spain, southwest of Barcelona. Oft ignored as ‘lesser than’ compared to the tinier but mightier DOQ it surrounds, this wine is proof the region may yet see an export market more than willing to invest in its wines.
Purchased in Vancouver, BC, Albert Jané’s white grenache wine is the real deal (for more information from Miquel Hudin’s Wine on VI, click here). He also makes wine at Ritme Celler in Priorat (which I enjoyed at our hotel there in January 2015).
A deep lemon tone, this wine has aromas of brine, lime, pink grapefruit, white peach and pebbles. The sherry-like palate is dry with a structured body, juicy acidity and flavours of more white peach and ripe apricot with lime rind, lemon curd and minerals.
A solid finish rounds out this well-balanced, WSET Good plus wine. Available at Marquis Wine Cellars.
