When I received my WSET Diploma at the graduation ceremony in London, England in 2015, we took a trip following the big event to Priorat DOQ in Spain.

Take a moment to read at this link how I managed, against all odds, to end up tasting wine with Daphne Glorian, the Queen of Priorat, at her home in Gratallops.
When we were there, Daphne had autographed and given me a bottle of the Laurel 2012 (which we tasted in 2015) to bring back to Canada. I aged it in my cellar – until last night when I pulled it out for my 60th birthday.
When I tasted it in 2015 at 3 years old with Daphne, it had been ruby coloured and intensely mineral with black fruit, soy sauce and licorice – divine and yet, approachable.
In 2026 and 14 years old, this wine is a completely different beast. The vintage has proven to be a standout, capturing an exceptional balance between power and acessibility. Indeed, Wine Advocate gave it a 96 point rating.
Still slightly translucent, but now garnet, the nose and palate are intense and reflect red and black plum, figgy pudding, and late August blackberries. Deep mulberry and boysenberry with cinnamon are especially evident. The tannins are plush. All parts of this beautifully developed wine are seamless.
In the height of its drinking window, we were lucky to experience it with Maryse’s delicious dinner – gently spiced back ribs, and mac & cheese with roasted beans.
If you’re holding this wine, or anything from this Priorat vintage, enjoy it now.
